The HR-1A Jet Engine
Automatic Start that is Way Too Cool!!

The air start system works!! I managed to start the turbine up today on propane using the air start. To get it to start easily, I first started the engine up using the leaf blower and found a good idle point. I set the idle using a ball valve. Now to start the engine with the air impingement I only had to start the turbine spinning and turn on the ignition and propane with it set to the preset idle level. The two videos below show how well the system works, and I am sure glad that all my hard work wasn't a waste. I have to tell you, seeing the engine start up without a leaf blower is so cool!

Air start test number 1

This is my first attempt at starting the engine with the air impingement system. It works great, but the real test will be to see if it is repeatable and reliable.

Air start test number 2

Here is the video of the second test of the air start. It seems to light off quickly every time and looks like it will be reliable. Again, I'm glad the system works, and will be happy to be able to do away with the leaf blower.

Air start test number 3 on diesel only!

And Finally, the air starter working on diesel only with no propane pilot flame! The start up takes just a bit longer due to the characteristics of diesel and the burn rate, but it does work. Now I will finally be able to start up the jet from the drivers seat of the jet kart! This marks a very important development for me, and further development of the engine controls and kart modifications will come soon.

Warning! The projects depicted in this website can be dangerous. While this website is not intended to be an instructional course on how to build these projects, we do realize that individuals may attempt to build their own versions. We highly suggest that you take all appropriate safety precautions when dealing with machinery, and use extreme care while operating jet engines. Serious injury or death can occur while operating a jet turbine engine in close proximity, due to explosive fuels and moving parts. Extreme amounts of potential and kinetic energy are stored in operating engines. Always use caution and good judgment while operating engines and machinery, and wear appropriate eye and hearing protection.
